Seascape Design Process
Seascape is one of our most popular designs.
Therefore we are very excited that there will be new colour ways coming very soon!
Here is the story behind the design taken from my book 'Quiet Pattern- Gentle Design for Interiors' published by Clearview.
Seascape was one of my first designs and one that is most important to me. I worked on it for about a year and a half, or more before I launched it as wallpaper. I drew and redrew various versions of the waves countless times to make them work as a subtle pattern that flowed seamlessly across the wall. I wanted the design to be calming without any of the waves looking clumsy or jarring but keeping a naïve hand drawn quality that celebrates the imperfection of hand drawn lines.
The sea in North Cornwall where I have spent numerous family holidays inspired the wave design. I used to visit Hawkers Cove near Padstow over many years. We would stay in a little fisherman’s cottage, and later in an old, converted lifeboat station that is built into the rocks of a cliff; when the tide comes up the lifeboat station is surrounded by sea.
The atmosphere can be incredibly dramatic when the weather is stormy but very peaceful when the sea is calm, and the sky is clear. We spent many hours lounging on the rocks, and swimming in the sea. The place is steeped in happy memories for me, and also a sense of loss for those who are no longer there with us. This slight melancholy is unintentionally echoed in the original colour ways of the design, but this is also how the English sea can be, often grey and gloomily overcast.
Seascape wallpaper is currently available in five colours- keep your eyes peeled for more colours coming very soon!
