Pattern for the minimalist

I am very aware that wallpaper is not for everyone.

I used to be very anti-pattern… I craved clean raw spaces with stone, concrete and wood, plain colours and certainly no pattern. I thought of pattern as loud, brash, and overwhelming.

But, after many years in my former life working as an interior stylist (often compiling the new seasons fabric pages) I saw so many different fabrics and wallpapers that I began to appreciate the detail and quality of the material as well as the narrative behind the design.

It was during this time that I realised that pattern can be subtle, delicate, and can enhance and give depth to a space rather than dominating it.

But for those of you who prefer a more minimal take on pattern I have selected the designs above to inspire you with a muted monochrome palette, simple hand drawn lines and natural textures of linen, wool and organic cotton mixed in amongst the wallpapers.

Pattern can be soothing, calming and anchoring. It has become a staple in my own design choices and I’d love to know if you have used pattern as a neutral alternative in your design schemes…
