Interior Designer: Nicole Roe Design
It is an honour to work with so many hugely talented and incredibly varied interior designers and architects and to see how they use my patterns in their projects. I hope that this ongoing series of features on the website focusing on interior designers whose work I admire will inspire anyone who is dreaming of decorating their own home.
Today I would like to introduce you to Nicole Roe Design. Nicole knew early on that she loved beautiful spaces. “As a child I was very affected by my environment. How a space felt and functioned was very important to me and when something was off, I could never quite settle.” Luckily her very supportive parents would let her repaint her room on a whim when she fancied a different colour.
Nicole went on to study Building and Construction for her degree and she gets immense satisfaction seeing a project go all the way from concept to dream space. This ability to work on all stages, from construction drawings through to fully completed interior design scheme enables her to be flexible, working on the construction of new builds as well as renovating older properties.
For many years Nicole completed projects for family and friends before making Nicole Roe Design official in 2019 and launching her own company. She focuses on function primarily, but always ensures the space is fun and on brand for her client. “We make sure to push clients slightly beyond their comfort zone. There needs to be a little grit and a little edge, something unexpected. Wallpaper is a great way to get a client to be excited. If they can fall in love with a wallpaper, then they are much quicker to trust that the end result will be everything they desire,” says Nicole.
Nicole almost always chooses the wallpaper first when designing a project. “The paper sets the tone of the room and allows us to know what elements will make the space feel complete. Do we now need a small scale, do we need something shiny or, do we need something with texture? Wallpaper makes a space feel special and really thought out in a way a can of paint can't accomplish,” says Nicole.
The first time that Nicole used Seascape wallpaper it was her client who introduced her to the design. “I quickly approved. The town that I live in is comprised of dozens of lakes and we needed something that gave the lake vibe but wasn’t too themed,” she says. Nicole then worked on another project in the same town, another bathroom for which she also chose Seascape wallpaper, but this time in Sunrise. “Both clients actually live on lakes, the bathrooms are extremely different, but both have the beautiful, curved lines of Seascape.”
